At re:Invent this week, Amazon announced Amazon EKS Distro (AKA EKS-D). But what is EKS-D all about and where or when should you use it? Read on to learn the basics about EKS-D.
What is Amazon EKS Distro (EKS-D)?
Amazon EKS Distro is a Kubernetes distribution based on and used by Amazon EKS. Organizations can create reliable and secure Kubernetes clusters using the same versions of Kubernetes and its dependencies deployed by Amazon EKS.
Enterprises often want a consistent Kubernetes experience both on-premises in their data center and also in the cloud. This helps them more easily set up hybrid environments and migrate apps and clusters easier between the two.
What are the Benefits of Amazon EKS Distro?
With EKS-D, companies can standardize and use the exact same Kubernetes distribution as they use with Amazon EKS for non-AWS environments as well. Each EKS-D release follows the Amazon EKS process, verifying new Kubernetes versions for compatibility. Amazon provides extended support for Kubernetes versions after community support expires, providing updated builds of previous versions including the latest security patches.
Of course, Rafay’s Managed Kubernetes Platform helps companies manage almost any distro across their environment, all through a single pane of glass. Check out this video to learn more about Amazon EKS-D and how to provision and manage EKS-D clusters using Rafay’s Managed Kubernetes Platform.
